Okonjo-Iweala's Statement Baffles House Of Representatives

The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has been confused by a statement made earlier by the Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, about a 50 questions 'homework' she has failed to submit to the House.

On December 19, the lawmakers gave 50 questions on the state of national economy to Okonjo-Iweala and asked her to submit it in writing in two weeks, by January 2.

However, the Minister told State House reporters in Abuja on Friday that she needed more time to answer the questions as some of them are "very weighty".

The House said they welcomed Okonjo-Iweala's request to postpone the deadline.However, they were clearly confused and irate because initially the Minister was to answer all 50 questions when she appeared before the Committee on December 19.

"Isn't it curious then that when she was not feeling well, the Minister was prepared to address 50 questions in a session that was to last just about two hours, and now that she is fully fit, hale and hearty,` she is saying she would need more time? Nigerians would have expected her, in her present re-invigorated state of health, to tell them she would tackle the questions in 30 minutes!" said the Committee's press statement.

The Committee added it was "awaiting" the Minister's response but did not set a new deadline. Neither did they specify what the "consequences" for neglecting the task would be.

Ibori to complete jail term in Nigeria.

The Nigerian and United Kingdom authorities have signed an agreement for the exchange of prisoners between them. Under this agreement, high-profile prisoners like former Governor James Ibori of Delta State, and other Nigerians in the UK prisons will be transferred to Nigeria to complete their jail terms.

The UK Minister of Justice, Mr. Jeremy Wright, signed on behalf of his country while the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, SAN, signed for Nigeria in Abuja. Wright, who visited the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, and the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, said, “In relation to individual prisoners, there has to be a good deal of discussion between our two countries about individual prisoners and the agreement of both countries to be secured before individual transfers.

The compulsory nature of this prisoner transfer agreement is that the prisoners’ themselves do not have to choose where they go or not but the respective countries do still have an opportunity to discuss whether a transfer should be made.’’ Responding, Onwuliri said, “We have been on the prisoners agreement for a long time and we are happy that we are beginning the year on a happy note by signing this agreement”.

OBJ Leaves PDP, Says He Cannot Stand a Wanted Criminal as Zonal Party Leader in the South-West

The season of letters continued on January 11, 2014, Saturday, as a new document from Olusegun Obasanjo has leaked the web.

In the new message OBJ narrates about his decision to withdraw activites in the ruling party, PDP.

Dear Chairman,

While I believe that a good and truly national political party must be a microcosm of the nation in its membership made up of all sorts of characters from near-saints to near-satan, I also believe that on no account should a known habitual criminal that is wanted abroad to face criminal that is wanted abroad to face criminal charges leveled against him should be extolled as a political leader in a respectable and wholesome nation-building political party.

Buruhi Kasharnu has been so extolled in PDP in South-West geo-political zone which I personally find unsavoury. Politics played by any national political party must have morality, decency, discipline, principles and leadership examples as cardinal practices of the Party. O have attached here recent documents that clearly indicated that your extolled PDP Zonal Leader in the South-West Zone of Nigeria and in indigene of Ogun State is, to say the least, not a credit to the Party as a member let along being a zonal leader.

Since I stack in my practice of party politics to the hallowed and cherished principles enunciated above, I take this opportunity to let you know that while I continue to remain a card-carrying member of PDP, I cannot and I will not subscribe to a wanted habitual criminal being installed as my zonal leader in the Party; a criminal for who extradition has been requested by the US Government, in the meantime, I will consider withdrawing my activity with PDP at Local, State, Zonal and national levels until the anomalous and shameful situation is corrected.

President Jonathan turns against Tukur.

At last, President Goodluck Jonathan has turned against the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, as the crisis rocking the ruling party worsens. For the first time, the President openly condemned the party chairman’s administrative style at a stormy  meeting  with Tukur  and  other members of the PDP National Working Committee at the presidential villa  in Abuja  on Thursday night. At the meeting held under what could best be described as a tensed atmosphere, the President was said to have expressed his displeasure over the way the PDP chairman was running the party. Specifically, the President was said to have pointedly accused Tukur of not working well with some organs of the party like the members of the National Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, governors and state party chairmen   across the states.

’’Tukur was said to have fired back and accused some of the NWC members of being anti-Jonathan, alleging a gang up of some of the members of the NWC against him.Tukur, it was also gathered, said he had wanted to work with a team but allegedly regretted that he was only able to have a group to work with among the NWC members.This was said to have drawn the anger of the NWC members as they were said to have asked if only Tukur was capable of singlehandedly returning the President to office in 2015.Some of the governors and stakeholders of the party are said to be insisting on the removal of Tukur so that peace to return could the troubled party, which has lost five governors and 37 members of the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress. But a chieftain of the party, who was also at the meeting, and who spoke on the condition of anonymity, accused   Akpabio  of working against Jonathan and destabilising the NWC.He said, “Unknown to many, while Akpabio pretends to be working for the President, he has his eyes on the ticket either as the Presidential or Vice-Presidential candidate in case the heat becomes too much for President Jonathan and he chooses not to run. So, the strategy is to first stoke the fire on the President’s key supporters and at the same time pretend to be fighting for him.“Towards this end, he has mobilised these people to destabilise the NWC with a view to seeing to Tukur’s exit. Of late, he has been going round, especially to the North, with a view to mobilising support for his concealed agenda.

”But political analysts believe that  Akpabio’s move against Tukur might have been informed by the perceived body language of the President against Tukur in his desperate  bid to please party members in order to get the party ticket to run in 2015.They argue that Akpabio, being one of Jonathan’s loyalists is not likely to do anything against him and   that he might just be acting the script of the President by moving against the party chairman.

Uduaghan to run for senate in 2015 !

Delta State governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan on Thursday, announced his intention to run for Delta South senatorial district seat in 2015, reports Vanguard.Uduaghan, while speaking with journalists in Asaba, said that there was an unwritten zonal arrangement on where the senatorial race would go at every point in time.

Uduaghan while speaking denied allegations that he was defecting to another political party.Uduaghan announced that PDP was already putting some strategies in place to address its challenges.
