Nigeria's oldest preacher, 114 dies: church

The country's oldest preacher, who seven years ago married a woman 77 years his junior, has died, church officials said on Wednesday. He was said to have been 114.
The Reverend Samuel Akinbode Sadela died on Sunday after a brief illness associated with old age, a senior official in his Gospel Apostolic Church in the Gbagada district of Lagos told AFP.
"Papa (Sadela) died shortly after he took ill. We really miss the pastor who founded and nurtured the church to its present level," said the official, who asked not to be named.
Sadela, a widely-travelled churchman who had preached in the United States and Britain, maintained that he was born in August 1900, according to his congregation. But no official document supports the claim.
If he was born on that date, he would have been the oldest man in the world.
Dozens of church members, sympathisers and relations queued on Wednesday to sign a book of condolence in the church grounds.
Sadela, who had been on the pulpit for 82 years, married his third wife in 2007, a 30-year-old woman called Christiana.
His first marriage, which yielded seven children, none of whom survived infancy, lasted 21 years. He married his second wife in 1965 and had four children, two of whom died. She passed away in 2001.
Guinness World Records on August 20 confirmed Sakari Momoi, of Japan, as the world's oldest living man as 111 years 196 days. He was born on February 5, 1903.

Last night, Beyonce snatched wigs while her daughter Blue Ivy stole hearts at the MTV Video Music Awards.
She came, she sang, she danced and she conquered, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter proved to the world once again why she is a phenomenon. Nominated for eight awards and being honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, no one needed to tell us it was a big night for Queen Bey.
While she performed, Jay Z and Blue were so glued and Blue could be seen clapping her hands ,dancing and saying "Yay mummy "

By the time, she was done, everyone was left spellbound
Jay later presented his wife with the Vanguard award, calling her the “greatest living entertainer” and while she cried, he kissed and hugged her.

Beyoncé cried as she took her award from her husband and her young daughter.
She and hubby Jay locked lips, dispelling any notion that there’s trouble in paradise — a show of marital bliss for all the world to see.
“I have nothing to say, but I’m filled with so much gratitude,” Beyoncé said. “I thank God for this moment. I love y’all so much. Blue Blue, I love you. My beloved, I love you. My fans, I love you. MTV, I love you. Goodnight.”

The Director of African Travel Market,  Ikechi Uko, has restated the need for a national carrier as part of measures to grow the tourism sector.
Uko, who made the call in a recent interview said  tourism flies on the wing of a national carrier and Nigeria needs one to become a tourism destination.
"I have always been an advocate of a national carrier because I have seen the benefits.I have worked with African airlines that are mostly government-owned and I know that the national carrier provided capacity that no airline can provide. The amount of training that the national carriers give in Africa is enormous. Capacity enhancement is one of the biggest problems we have because an airline will think of bottom-line" he said.
"I don’t want to train pilots for other people to poach or train an engineer for a Middle Eastern carrier to pay them double our offer. However, if you have a national carrier, this will be seen as national development. So, there are some things that are beneficial to the national carrier; there are some rights the national carrier will have which I think are missing”, he said.
Uko said Nigeria does not have any airline protecting its people. There is a gap in the aviation environment due to this fact.
According to him, Nigeria needs a national carrier that will represent and promote its tourism sector.
He also said the minister should go ahead to make sure Nigeria had a national carrier to drive tourism patronage.
Uko stressed the need to upgrade the aviation industry in order to boost tourism.
Osita Chidoka, the new Minister of Aviation, on assumption of office, promised to build on the Nigerian Aviation Master Plan to fast tract the growth and development of the sector.

7 most cringeworthy moments in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards

It’s almost time for the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, and as always, we can’t wait to see what happens!
Will Miley gyrate and twerk with her tongue out again? Will Britney kiss Madonna again? Will someone flash some boob? Whatever it is, the MTV Video Music Awards will definitely deliver something that will get the tongues wagging!
So, in preparation for the big night, which is airing live on Monday 25 August at 02:00 on MTV (DStv channel130) from The Forum theatre in Los Angeles, we decided to recap the seven most controversial moments in the history of the MTV VMAs.
Here goes:
7) Rebellion in its purist form
The fact that Nirvana had a love-hate relationship with MTV is common knowledge, but in 1992 the band created quite a stir with their performance at the awards show. MTV wanted them to perform their hit song Smells Like Teen Spirit, and of course, Kurt Cobain didn’t want to. He eventually agreed to playLithium, but in true Cobain style, he started out singing Rape Me on the night of the show before launching into Lithium. Such a rebel!

6) A bit of boob fondling anyone?
In 1999, Lil’Kim was literally the centre of attention when she rocked up at MTV VMAs with an off-shoulder/one-boob catsuit. The only thing covering her nipple was a sequinned pasty. So, while she was on stage, her co-presenter Diana Ross just couldn’t help herself and fondled her boob. We get it, it was just there, staring you in the face, we don't blame you Diana!

5) Britney’s massive fail
In 2007, Britney was given a performance slot for her song Gimme More at the MTV VMAs. What was meant to be a comeback after a disastrous few years turned into one of the most bizarre performance ever with Britney looking quite out-of-it and confused. Poor thing!

4) Courtney Love VS Madonna
During the 1995 MTV VMAs, Courtney Love decided to interrupt an interview with Madonna by throwing her with stuff from her handbag. Weird!

3) The famous threesome
Who could ever forget Madonna and Britney kissing on stage during the award show in 2003? But, what most people missed was the kiss between Madonna and Christina Aguilera! Yes, it did happen.

2) Kanye’s 15 seconds of fame

In 2009 Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video. Kanye just couldn’t take it and decided to storm the stage during Taylor’s acceptance speech to tell the world that Beyoncé deserved the award. Totes awkies!

1) Miley’s infamous twerking vibes

Yes, this is probably the most talked about VMA performance ever! Miley’s twerking/grinding/gyrating against Robin Thicke. Most. Awkward. Moment. Ever.

Justin Bieber pays monkey bill

Justin Bieber has finally paid the bill for abandoning his monkey

The Believe hitmaker landed in trouble with authorities Germany in March 2013 for illegally bringing his pet primate Mally into the country without the necessary paperwork or vaccinations, and rather than provide the needed documents, he chose to leave the creature behind.

The German Federal Nature Conservation Agency says the singer finally paid out $10 700 last week, which will cover the monkey's cost of living at a shelter for the past 17 months, as well as his import.

Mally is now living at a zoo in North Germany.

Meanwhile, the singer's entourage have been accused of bribing Canadian border officials.

A female officer at the Niagra Falls border has been fired after she reportedly accepted $10 000 worth of backstage passes to get members of Justin's team with criminal records into the country while he performed, TMZ reports.

The 'Beauty and a Beat' hitmaker player shows in Toronto last year, but it is unclear when the alleged bribes took pace as they only came to light when more of the singer's friends arrived at the border looking for ''special treatment'' and were reported by officers on duty

Robin Williams, boisterous comedy star, dead at 63

Robin Williams, a brilliant shapeshifter who could channel his frenetic energy into delightful comic characters like Mrs. Doubtfire or harness it into richly nuanced work like his Oscar-winning turn in Good Will Hunting, died on Monday in an apparent suicide. He was 63.
Williams was pronounced dead at his San Francisco Bay Area home on Monday, according to the sheriff's office in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The sheriff's office said the preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a suicide due to asphyxia.
The Marin County coroner's office said Williams was last seen alive at home at about 20:00 on Sunday. An emergency call from his house in Tiburon was placed to the Sheriff's Department shortly before noon on Monday.
"This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken," said Williams' wife, Susan Schneider. "On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."
Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. Just last month, he announced he was returning to a 12-step treatment programme he said he needed after 18 months of nonstop work. He had sought treatment in 2006 after a relapse following 20 years of sobriety.
From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV comedy Mork & Mindy, through his standup comedy act and such films as Good Morning, Vietnam, the short, barrel-chested Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement. Loud, fast and manic, he parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs.
He was a riot in drag in Mrs. Doubtfire, or as a cartoon genie in Aladdin. He won his Academy Award in a rare dramatic role, as an empathetic therapist in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting.
He was no less on fire in interviews. During a 1989 chat with The Associated Press, he could barely stay seated in his hotel room, or even mention the film he was supposed to promote, as he free-associated about comedy and the cosmos.
"There's an Ice Age coming," he said. "But the good news is there'll be daiquiris for everyone and the Ice Capades will be everywhere. The lobster will keep for at least 100 years, that's the good news. The Swanson dinners will last a whole millennium. The bad news is the house will basically be in Arkansas."

Tributes pouring in
As word of his death spread, tributes from inside and outside the entertainment industry poured in.
"Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalised on our own streets," President Barack Obama said in a statement.
Following Williams on stage, Billy Crystal once observed, was like trying to top the Civil War. In a 1993 interview with the AP, Williams recalled an appearance early in his career on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Bob Hope was also there.
"It was interesting," Williams said. "He was supposed to go on before me and I was supposed to follow him, and I had to go on before him because he was late. I don't think that made him happy. I don't think he was angry, but I don't think he was pleased.
"I had been on the road and I came out, you know, gassed, and I killed and had a great time. Hope comes out and Johnny leans over and says, 'Robin Williams, isn't he funny?' Hope says, 'Yeah, he's wild. But you know, Johnny, it's great to be back here with you.'"
In 1992, Carson chose Williams and Bette Midler as his final guests.
Like so many funnymen, Williams had dramatic ambitions. He played for tears in AwakeningsDead Poets Society and What Dreams May Come, which led New York Times critic Stephen Holden to write that he dreaded seeing the actor's "Humpty Dumpty grin and crinkly moist eyes".
But other critics approved, and Williams won three Golden Globes, for Good Morning, VietnamMrs. Doubtfire and The Fisher King.
"Robin was a lightning storm of comic genius and our laughter was the thunder that sustained him. He was a pal and I can't believe he's gone," Spielberg said.

Personal life
His personal life was often short on laughter. He had acknowledged drug and alcohol problems in the 1970s and '80s and was among the last to see John Belushi before the Saturday Night Live star died of a drug overdose in 1982.
Williams announced in 2006 that he was drinking again but rebounded well enough to joke about it during his recent tour. "I went to rehab in wine country," he said, "to keep my options open." The following year, he told the AP that people were surprised he was no longer clean.
"I fell off the wagon after 20 years and people are like, 'Really?' Well, yeah. It only kicks in when you really want to change," he said.
Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams would remember himself as a shy kid who got some early laughs from his mother - by mimicking his grandmother. He opened up more in high school when he joined the drama club, and he was accepted into the Juilliard Academy, where he had several classes in which he and Christopher Reeve were the only students and John Houseman was the teacher.
Encouraged by Houseman to pursue comedy, Williams identified with the wildest and angriest of performers: Jonathan Winters, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, George Carlin. Their acts were not warm and lovable. They were just being themselves.
"You look at the world and see how scary it can be sometimes and still try to deal with the fear," he said in 1989. "Comedy can deal with the fear and still not paralyse you or tell you that it's going away. You say, OK, you got certain choices here, you can laugh at them and then once you've laughed at them and you have expunged the demon, now you can deal with them. That's what I do when I do my act."
He unveiled Mork, the alien from the planet Ork, in an appearance on the comedy Happy Days and was granted his own series, which ran from 1978 to 1982 and co-starred Pam Dawber as a woman who takes in the interplanetary visitor.
"I am completely and totally devastated," Dawber said in a statement. "What more can be said?"
Following his success in films, Williams often returned to television - for appearances on Saturday Night Live, for Friends, for comedy specials, forAmerican Idol, where in 2008 he pretended to be a "Russian idol" who belts out a tuneless, indecipherable My Way.
Williams could handle a script, when he felt like it, and also think on his feet. He ad-libbed in many of his films and was just as quick in person. During a media tour for Awakenings, when director Penny Marshall mistakenly described the film as being set in a "menstrual hospital," instead of "mental hospital," Williams quickly stepped in and joked, "It's a period piece."
Winner of a Grammy in 2003 for best spoken comedy album, Robin Williams - Live 2002, he once likened his act to the daily jogs he took across the Golden Gate Bridge. There were times he would look over the edge, one side of him pulling back in fear, the other insisting he could fly.
"You have an internal critic, an internal drive that says, 'OK, you can do more.' Maybe that's what keeps you going," Williams said. "Maybe that's a demon. ... Some people say, 'It's a muse.' No, it's not a muse! It's a demon! DO IT YOU BASTARD!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! THE LITTLE DEMON!!"
In addition to his wife, Williams is survived by his three children: daughter Zelda, 25; and sons Zachary, 31, and Cody, 19.

Cher: I can't even look at myself in the mirror

Cher claims she hasn't looked in a mirror in years.

The Believe hitmaker admits she is "not a confident person" and hates getting older.

The 68-year-old star told the August/September issue of AARP The Magazine: "Every once in a while I think, 'Jesus, you're so old! How did this happen?' I haven't looked in the mirror in years. The only time I was happy with the way I looked was when I was, like, 40 to 45.

"Older men rarely liked me. If it wasn't for younger men, I would never have a date."

She added: "I'm not a confident person, and I'm really not a Cher fan. But I want to make sure I'll do a great job, so I go balls to the wall and try to do every single thing I can."

But Cher has no plans to step back from the spotlight and retire.

She said: "I don't intend to step aside. This is the first generation that's said, 'We're not going to roll over and play dead because we're a certain age.' "

Meanwhile, the Strong Enough singer says she initially struggled when her 45-year-old son Chaz Bono - formerly Chastity Bono - first began transitioning from a woman into a man in 2008.

She said: "He'd forgotten to erase his old outgoing message, I thought, 'I'm never going to hear my daughter's voice again."

Asked if she had any advice for other parents going through similar experiences, she said: "Have faith and hold on. It's scary because you don't know how you're going to feel."
