Nollywood star seeks more stakeholder support for entertainment industry

Moji Olaiya, a Nollywood actress, on Monday called on stakeholders in the entertainment sector to support the Federal Government’s Transformation Agenda.

Olaiya said in Lagos that every Nigerian should be an entertainment ambassador.

She said Nigerians should create opportunities through attitudes geared towards the promotion of African music and culture.

"The entertainment practitioners have to encourage tourists to visit Africa because earnings, revenues and resources are meagre and highly competitive. It is only when you attract them through quality songs and services that tourists and visitors will patronise Africa and increase our revenue earnings. So, it is high time the entertainers encouraged visitors and tourists to patronise the industry by producing quality songs and rendering good services required by foreigners,’’ Olaiya said.

She said that the development of the entertainment industry was the collective responsibility of all.

Olaiya called on Nigerians in general to also join forces in making the entertainment transformation agenda of the Federal Government a reality.

She urged entertainment practitioners to partner with the Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP), to re-invent and reposition the industry for sustainable national economic growth.

Olaiya said that the entertainment industry would develop, if the Federal Government pays adequate attention to the sector.

"The industry will fetch the government huge revenue, if well funded, adequate funding will make the Nollywood industry compete with its foreign counterparts on a near equal footing," she added. 

Nollywood reads for Children’s Day

As part of the 2014 Best Of Nollywood Awards(BON), Nollywood stars, OC Ukeje, Doris Simeon and Dayo Amusa will be in Port Harcourt, for the BON Children’s Day book reading, reports Movie Moments

The event which takes place on Tuesday, will be chaired by the the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, his wife and other government dignitaries in the state.

Other Nollywood top acts expected for the reading include; Ibinabo Fiberesima, Joseph Benjamin, Yomi Fash Lanso, Tamara Eteimo, Alexx Ekubo, Mercy Aigbe Gentry, Olaitan Ogungbile and Sylvia Oluchi.

South Africa biggest winner in AMAA awards

The South African movie industry emerged biggest winner at the just-ended 2014 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held in Bayelsa State.

The country scooped ten awards including the biggest award of the night, AMAA 2014 Award for Best Film (Of Good Report).

The movie also earned South Africa another four crests in the categories for Achievement In Screen Play; Best Young/Promising Actor (Petronella Tshuma); Best Actor In A Leading Role (Mothusi Magano); and Best Director (Jamil X.T Quebeka).

The country also scooped the awards for Best Animation (Khumba), Achievement In Make Up (Once Upon A Road Trip), Achievement In Cinematography (The Forgotten Kingdom), Achievement In Sound (The Forgotten Kingdom) and Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Thapelo Mofekeng).

Ghana' Shirley Frimpong Manso’s film,Potomanto, won the award for Achievement in Editing, while "Northern Affair", a Leila Djansi's film makes it double for Ghana with the award in the Achievement In Production Design category.

Nigeria's seasoned actresses, Clarion Chukwurah, emerged the best actress on the continent.

Chukwurah clinched the AMAA 2014 Award For Best Actress In A Leading Role for her outstanding performance in the movie“Apaye.”

She beat to the crown other top actresses including Uche Nnadili (B For Boy), Linda Sokhulu (Felix), Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha (Accident), Joselyn Dumas (Northern Affair) , Uche Jombo, Monalisa Chinda and Daniella Okeke (Lagos Cougar).  

Patience Ozokwo also shone at the awards.

The ageless actress emerged the winner in the category of Best Actress In A Supporting Role for her role in the movie, “After The Proposal.”

Nigeria also recorded achievement in Best Documentary (Portraits of a Lone Farmer), Best Film In African Language (B For Boy), Achievement In Soundtrack (Onye Ozi), Achievement In Visual Effect (A Mile From Home) and Award For Best Nigerian Film (Accident).

Bob Manuel Udokwu, seasoned actor  was the recipient of the AMAA Special Jury honour.

He was recognised for his more than two decades contribution to the movie industry in Nigeria and Africa.

The Hunger Games wins big at The Empire Cinemas Alternative Movie Awards

The Hunger Games: Catching Firetriumphed at The Empire Cinemas Alternative Movie Awards.

Jennifer Lawrence won Sexiest Actress and Best Film Hero for her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the second installment of the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' trilogy. 

The 23-year-old star also picked up the gong for Best On-Screen Kiss for her smooch with Liam Hemsworth who stars as Gale Hawthorne while the sci-fi adventure picked up a further award for Best Sequel. 

Jon Nutton, Marketing Director for Empire Cinemas, said: "It's obvious that Jennifer Lawrence has captured the hearts, and funny bones, of the public and can do no wrong as her character Katniss Everdeen. Thor: The Dark World was another big winner - picking up a hat-trick of awards for Best Screen Fight as well as Chris Hemsworth's Sexiest Male Actor prize and Best Film Villain for Tom Hiddleston.

Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio has been honoured for his role in The Wolf Of Wall Street and last year'sThe Great Gatsby with a People's Choice Award after losing out on in the Best Actor category at this year's Academy Awards.

The award's winners are voted solely by movie fans with DiCaprio picking up a huge 60 per cent of the public vote, beating stiff competition from '12 Years A Slave' actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and American Hustlestar Lawrence.

Man steals bread truck, makes deliveries

A man in New York City on Monday stole a bread truck, but astonishingly decided to keep the deliveries going – but to the wrong people.

David Bastar reportedly jumped in the Grimaldi's Home of Bread truck in Manhattan while the actual Grimaldi’s employee was making a delivery to a pizzeria, Huffington Post reports.

Bastar then made a couple of deliveries dressed in only his undies, as you normally would on a day you steal a bread truck.

He was later arrested at LaGuardia Airport where he may or may not have attempted to make an international bread delivery.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are officially "Bound" to each other.

The celebrity couple, who have made a habit of over-the-top, public displays of affection, got hitched Saturday in a decidedly private spot: a Renaissance fortress in Florence.

The nuptials were confirmed to The Associated Press by Kardashian's representative, who noted the reporting of E! Online, the news site from the network that carries her reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

E! Online reported the wedding party consisted of her sisters, while stepfather Bruce Jenner walked her down the aisle. Andrea Bocelli and John Legend sang for the couple at the reception.

The city's mayor's office had said a week earlier that the couple had rented Belvedere Fort for a wedding to be performed by a Protestant minister, adding a flurry of excitement in the entertainment world about the ceremony, which had been anticipated for months.

In the days before the nuptials, the pair held court in Paris, parading in front of photographers for pre-wedding festivities. Kardashian posted a picture on the social media site Instagram of the gardens of fashion designer Valentino's 17th-century Chateau de Wideville west of Paris, where one of their events was being held. The couple also toured the Chateau of Versailles.

The family arriving in Florence:

The duo, who have one child together, were not shy about their romance; he briefly appeared on her reality show, and he gushed about his love for her in a talk show hosted by her mother, Kris Jenner. A topless Kardashian also starred in his music video for "Bound 2," in which they simulated having sex on a motorcycle bike.

West, 36, proposed to Kardashian, 33, in October on her birthday. He rented out San Francisco's AT&T Park to pop the question.

But when it came to the wedding, media was only able to get photos of the many celebrity guests at the wedding.

Among the notables sighted arriving in Florence ahead of the nuptials were Steve McQueen, director of Oscar-winner "12 Years a Slave"; Lala Anthony, wife of NY Knicks basketball star Carmelo Anthony; Jaden Smith, the actor and teenage son of Will and Jada Smith; and Joe Francis of "Girls Gone Wild" video fame.

The nuptials drew crowds of fans eager to witness the glitzy event, but they were kept far away from the heavily-walled 16th century fortress, which offers stunning views of Florence and surrounding Tuscan hills.

Rob bails on Kim’s wedding and flies back to L.A. in tears!

 It seems like Brody Jenner wasn't the only Kardashian-Jenner family member not in attendance at Kim Kardashian's wedding to Kanye West.

Also missing from the festivities was Kim's younger brother Rob, 27, who bailed on the ceremony at the last minute.

A source confirmed to Us Weekly that Rob flew out of Paris, France, on Saturday morning a few hours ahead of his sister's much buzzed-about nuptials in Florence, Italy. 

According to TMZ Rob booked a flight from Florence to L.A in a hurry and was apparently in tears while desperately trying to secure a seat.

Background

My name is Bunmi Ademokoya. I am a 25 year-old international model. I shuffle between New York, South Africa and Nigeria. I am the first of three children. My mother is a teacher and my father, an insurance broker. I attended Federal Government College, Osun State and I am currently studying law at the University of South Africa.

Modelling

I gained admission to a university in Nigeria when I was 16. Due to the nature of the job, it was difficult to continue schooling in Nigeria. When I was supposed to be abroad, I was writing exams or the school was on strike. It was very hard for me. I had to start all over in South Africa.

Job experience

There are different styles of modelling for different markets. I was on the runway of this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. I also featured in a recent advert campaign for a cosmetics range. When I am in New York, I have to be extremely fit. I have to lose weight because it is a very competitive market and one needs to be on top of her game. What I do is that a couple of months before going to New York, I start working out, I watch the food I eat and drink a lot of water to hydrate my skin. In South Africa and Nigeria, we celebrate more curvy people so I just need to maintain my regular figure which is still skinny by Nigerian standard.

Competition and profits

The competition is very high in New York. It is the fashion capital of the world and one needs to have something to offer. Thanks to Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek, black skin is now being accepted everywhere. The market for blacks is still a little bit small but it is a good one. One needs a very good agent and manager to put one in the right place. How lucrative is modelling? Like any other business, one has to invest in modelling. If you do everything right, you need to give it a couple of years before the money starts coming. You need to invest time and money and also do a lot of free shows. I started modelling in 2007 and this is 2014. I have paid my dues of doing free shows and free magazine shoots. Now they cannot afford me if I want to bill them.

Marketing strategy

There are two ways of selling one’s brand; one can rely on a manager and also try to sell her brand by herself. Since I don’t work in Nigeria, whenever I am here, I go out so that people can get acquainted with my face.

Harassment

Harassment is everywhere; it depends on how you handle it. I have not experienced any sexual harassment in the modelling industry but just because one is black and a female, she is open to harassment.

Pressure

I keep myself grounded and I have God on my side. I believe I am a humble person. I just tell myself to keep calm. As a lawyer, one has to think rationally and be objective.

Future prospects

I will be a bigger and a better brand.

Style

Style, to me, means comfortable chic. Once I am out of the modelling scene, I try to adopt a calmer look. At such times, I would just want to be cute, funny and free. I have jeans in abundance. I don’t do much of accessories but I love wrist watches and sunglasses.

Relationship

I was in a relationship but it did not work out. I am single now and living life. I have not decided yet if I will get involved with another man. I think for now I am just going to take a break because I was in a relationship for five years. I am a young girl, just trying to discover myself.

He’s sitting up and he’s struggling to get the words out, but he can’t really do it. And as Suge is yelling ‘Pac!,’ I look down and I realize that this is Tupac Shakur.

"So I’m looking at Tupac, and I’m asking him, ‘Who shot you? What happened? Who did it?’ And he was just kind of ignoring me. He was making eye contact with me here and there, but he’s trying to yell at Suge. And I kept asking over and over, ‘Who did this? Who shot you?’ And he basically kept ignoring me.
