Wonder who the past winners of Bigbrother Africa reality TV show are?

On July 31, another exciting season of Mnet’s reality TV show Big Brother Africa (BBA) came to a sizzling end with two winners walking away with $200,000 (about Kshs.18m) each!
Nigeria’s Karen Igho and Zimbabwe’s Wendall Parson were the winners. But who are the former winners, how will Africa remember them and what did they do with the cash?

BBA1 Winner – Cherise Makubale

The first season of Big Brother Africa, featuring 12 housemates from 12 different African countries, premiered to audiences in 42 African countries on Sunday May 25, 2003, and ended on September 7 of the same year, lasting 106 days. It was the first time in the world that the internationally famous program was created using participants of different nationalities from one continent. Mark Pilgrim was the host. When Cherise won, she kicked off a whole new trend for subsequent contestants on the show – especially the women. Winning in the inaugural show, no one knew what Africa was looking for in a winner.

Cherise came into the house, cooked, cleaned and stayed away from the ‘bad’ boys. Africa rewarded her with the $100,000 prize money with most viewers agreeing she represented the true African woman. But that is Africa for you; subsequent housemates like Nigeria’s Offuneka in season 2 and Zambia’s Paloma in season 4 tried to cook, clean and be motherly like Cherise, but Africa rewarded them with a big yawn.
Moving on, Cherise is reportedly living a large and comfortable life in the UK after getting married in October 2008. She is also still involved in charitable ventures in Zambia, although she is hardly seen in her hometown Kitwe.

BBA2 Winner – Richard Bezuidenhout

The second season of Big Brother Africa, featuring 12 housemates from 12 different African countries, premiered August 5, 2007, and ended on November 11 of the same year, lasting 98 days. The show returned from its four year hiatus, with a brand new host, Kabelo "KB" Ngakane. Richard's win is still the most surprising of all that changed everything on the reality TV show. In his case, that was sheer luck. For once, African women chose to empathise with ‘the other woman’. See, Richard came into the house as the only married housemate. Newlywed, by any standards.
But in a matter of weeks, he was cheating on his wife Ricki, with the Angolan model Tatiana Durao. His emotional rollercoaster – tearfully admitting on several occasions that he was falling in love with Tatiana, but also still loved his wife dearly – got Africa talking and prolonging his soap opera.
Because of this – and quite accidentally, I believe – Richard ended up being the last man standing. Richard is reportedly still married to Ricki and they now have a son, Joshua. He has also established his film company in Tanzania, which is doing really well.

BBA3 Winner – Ricardo VenĂ¢ncio (Ricco)

The third season of Big Brother Africa, featured 12 housemates from 12 different African countries, premiered August 24, 2008, and ended on November 23 of the same year, lasting 91 days. Kabelo "KB" Ngakane returned as host. Ricco, Ricco, Ricco. Someone remind me again; why did he win? I like to think it had something to do with his looks and the fact that he came from Angola, land of Tatiana Durao, the girl who pulled at a few heartstrings the season before Ricco’s when she fell for the wrong man and got burnt for it, while her partner in crime was rewarded in typical African style.
Ricco reportedly relocated to Brazil for studies and he’s also dating.

BBA Revolution winner – Kevin Chuwang Pam

The concluded fourth season of Big Brother Africa, featured 25 housemates from 14 different African countries. The season premiered September 6, 2009, and ended on December 6 of the same year, lasting 91 days. This year, Ikponmwosa "I.K." Osakioduwa took over as the new host. Kevin was the first to walk away with the doubled prize money of $200,000. The pint-sized Nigerian initially showed tendencies of getting on the last nerves of the Pan African viewers with his constant dancing before the mirrors and rapping.
But his fortunes turned around when he started showing interest in Tanzania’s representative in the house, the beautiful Elizabeth Gupta.

As the saga of Kevin trying to get this girl continued, his ratings outside the house soared. At one time, he broke down and sobbed in front of millions of enchanted viewers after yet another rejection from Elizabeth.
Come September 2009 and Kevin was the last man standing, winning the dollars for Nigeria. With the money, he has kick-started a singing career and even released an album. But more importantly, he got himself a wife in no other than the Tanzanian lass Elizabeth, who made an about turn and started loving short, black men with a few dollars to their name!

BBA All Stars winner – Uti Nwachukwu

Big Brother Africa 5 started on July 18, 2010, and ran for 91 days until October 17, 2010. This was an all-star series which featured 14 former Big Brother Africa contestants. For the second time IK was the host.
A year after Kevin won on the reality show, no one expected another Nigerian to win it so soon. But Uti breezed into the house in 2010 and turned out to be the most popular of housemates picked from various seasons of BBA. He had previously featured on season 3, where he was voted out because of his infamous temper tantrums that once saw him trash Big Brother’s house. When he returned for the All Stars season, he was a reformed man. Like his compatriot Kevin, the emotions card played well for Uti.
First, weeks into the game, he got devastating news from home that his father had died. He chose to stay in the game despite that, after reassurances from home that the funeral would be postponed until after his return. In a way, his winning was by many Africans’ way of sending him condolences.
But he also started a cat and mouse romance with Kenya’s beauty Sheila Kwamboka, a development that had Africa keep him longer in the house to see what would happen next.
Before anybody knew it, another Nigerian had won. With the $200,000, Uti has ventured into music, even releasing an album. He has also used his win to make inroads into Nollywood and for his modelling career. As for what happened to Shuti (as the Sheila/Uti romance was codenamed by viewers), it is not clear if the two are still seeing each other.

Big Brother Africa season 6

The sixth season of Big Brother Africa: Amplified ran for 91 days from May 1st, 2011 to 31 July the same year. Bringing together 26 housemates from 14 different African countries, Mnet co-partnered with Cocacola for the series. IK returned as host. This season is the first ever series of Big Brother in the world to have 2 winners.

Big Brother Africa season 7

With the continued success of Big Brother Africa, it is assumed that the 7th series will air sometime in 2012. My fellow BBA Fanatics, are you ready for the next season?

Big Men highlights violations in Niger Delta

A locally-produced film highlighting the problems characterizing communities that live in oil-rich parts of the country will be among the productions to feature at the upcoming Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Kenya.
Big Men, which exposes the lack of transparency and the corruption in oil contracts with multinational companies in Ghana, and the dire environmental and social effects on the people who live in the oil belts of Nigeria, will be staged on Monday.
“As Kenya seeks to exploit its recently discovered underground natural resources, the film raises the question: Is oil a blessing or a curse?”, organisers, the Human Rights Watch, said.
John Githongo of INUKA Trust will be the guest of honour at an opening reception.
A cautionary tale about the toll of American oil investment in West Africa, Big Men reveals the secretive worlds of both corporations and local communities in Nigeria and Ghana.
Director, Rachel Boynton, gained unprecedented access to oil companies in Africa and had created an account of the ambition, corruption, and greed that epitomized Africa’s “resource curse.” The film uncovers the human impact of oil drilling and includes footage of militants operating in the Niger Delta.
The 99-minute long production provides a nuanced and compelling illustration of the responsibility that a range of actors bear for the environmental, economic, and political harm inflicted by resource extraction.
The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will mark its fourth year in Nairobi on November 10-14, with a programme of films to raise awareness and spark critical reflection and debate while encouraging activism.
The films will be shown in the Alliance Française de Nairobi, Monrovia/Loita Street. Admission is free.
“This year’s Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Nairobi brings an array of thought-provoking films that raise issues ranging from the rights of women and sexual minorities to murky dealings of oil corporations and the scope of international justice,” said Laetitia Bader, researcher at Human Rights Watch and coordinator of the 2014 Nairobi screenings.
“These films give voice to people who courageously risk their lives and freedom to challenge abuse of power, discrimination, and injustice.”

Actor Keanu Reeves returns to the dark side in 'John Wick'

Actor Keanu Reeves travels to a murky underworld in the action thriller, "John Wick," playing a grieving husband and retired assassin, who reverts to being a killing machine to avenge the wrongs done to him by Russian mobsters.
The film, jam-packed with car chases, gun fights, mayhem and murder, is the directorial debut of Reeves' former stuntman Chad Stahelski and producer David Leitch.
As John Wick, Reeves single-handedly guns down enough mobsters to fill a small cemetery.
The film, which opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, is expected to earn an estimated $17 million during its opening weekend.
But positive reviews for the Lionsgate R-rated thriller with the feel of a graphic novel and plaudits for Reeves' performance, could boost its numbers against this week's other opener, the horror film "Ouija," predicted to rake in $28 million, according to pro.boxoffice.com.
"When we meet John Wick, we don't know anything about him except that he is grieving for his ill wife, who passes," said the 50-year-old Reeves, best known for "The Matrix" trilogy.
"As the story unfolds we come to learn about the myth of this man as a killer."
Wick had retired from his life of crime five years earlier. But after the son of a Russian mobster and his cronies invade his home, steal the classic car he refused to sell, and kill the puppy given to him by his late wife, Wick becomes a hit man once again.
"The script has these different textures and different worlds," said Reeves. "There is the real world and what comes to be revealed is this underworld. This den of thieves that has its own rules, has its own procedures, honor, code."
After arming himself with a small arsenal, Wick checks into the Continental Hotel. It is a safe haven for assassins, where killing is forbidden and the desk clerk can arrange an unquestioning doctor to patch up wounds, and even a waste disposal company to get rid of bullet-riddled bodies.
"There is a humor to the situation," Reeves said. "John is drenched in blood and he is asking about room service to get his shirt cleaned."
Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") is the Russian crime lord and Wick's former boss. "Game of Thrones" actor Alfie Allen, plays his son, who unleashes the wrath of Wick, and Willem Dafoe ("The Grand Budapest Hotel") is an assassin who accepts a contract to kill Wick.
The trade magazine Variety said Reeves reminds us "what a compelling action star he can be," and the Hollywood Reporter called the film "a visceral revenge thriller."
"After a marked absence from the genre, Reeves resoundingly returns with an effortless, kinetic style that positions the film extremely well for any potential follow-ups," it said.

Lionsgate is making the Wick character available as a free downloadable character to integrate into the video game "Payday 2," according to Variety.

Nicki Minaj got fired from a job once

Nicki Minaj was fired as a waitress after she chased a customer down the street for stealing her pen.

The Anaconda hitmaker, 31, admits, before she became famous, she was sacked from the restaurant The Red Lobster after she followed a couple into the car park and swore at them for pinching her biro.

Asked whether it was a special pen they'd snatched, Nicki told the November issue of GQ magazine: "No. It was the
principle."

Check out these snaps from the GQ shoot shared by Minaj on Instagram:

The curvaceous singer was also briefly a customer service representative for a company in New York, but that didn't really work out for her either as she didn't like the attitude she received from some people.

She explained: "I like dealing with people, but I don't really like a lot of bullshit, so maybe customer service wasn't the best job for me."

Meanwhile, despite her ongoing success in the music industry, the brunette beauty, who has been dating her boyfriend Safaree Samuels for nine years, is planning to put her career on hold in the near future in order to get married and start a family.

She said previously: "I don't want to work my whole life without ever experiencing the joys of a family. The time is not yet ripe, but when I decide to get married and become a mother, I would like to take a hiatus and dedicate myself completely to my child."
