Why I like wearing short dresses — Opeyemi Aiyeola

Opeyemi Aiyeola

Even though I was born in Lagos, I am from Sagamu, Ogun State. I am the second of my mother’s three children. I was singlehandedly raised by my mum because she and my father separated.

Education

I attended Our Lady of Apostles Private School, Yaba, for my elementary education and Remo Secondary School, for my post-elementary education. I earned an Ordinary National Diploma in Accountancy from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta. I bagged a degree in the same discipline from the Lagos State University, Ojo. My first acting gig was Papa Ajasco and Company. After acting for television for two years, I began to feature in movies.

The first movie I took part in was Rotimi Makinde’s Aso Iyi. By the time I finished that production, I had another offer to act in Bayowa Films’ Ige Adubi. I was one of those few lucky ones who kept getting roles back-to-back. I also featured in the movie Nkan Ini, by Yetunde Wunmi. I have produced some movies including Ogede Didun, Tenteni, and Oluwatimilehin, to name a few.Love and marriage are the reasons I relocated to the United Kingdom.

However, I love living in   Nigeria and if it were possible, I would want to live in Nigeria full-time again. In the United Kingdom, the winter season and the ‘do it yourself’ lifestyle is definitely a struggle, but the economic, social, health, emergency response and recovery agencies as well as equal rights, high standard of education and opportunities that abound are incomparable to what is obtainable in Nigeria.

Challenges

I always leave my kids and travel to Nigeria for work, so it’s quite tedious and challenging for me. Whenever I am away from the United Kingdom, my husband cares for our children in an excellent manner.

Celebrity marriages

It takes a lot to sustain a marriage and the truth is that when a break-up happens, it is not always the fault of the celebrity involved. Sometimes, the break-up might be due to the action or inaction of the celebrity’s spouse. Other factors like interference from in-laws, the media, family and friends, may also lead to conflict.

Roles

As a mother, wife and Yoruba lady, I don’t jump at every role that I am offered; I am quite picky. When you are given a script, it is your choice as an actor to be able to read through, analyse it and say, “I’m sorry, I cannot play this role.’’ Because I have a family that I do not want to let down, I would never play a role that my husband, children  and other members of my family won’t be proud of.

Motherhood

I have been able to create a work-life balance with the support of my family. I couldn’t have been able to do it without the support of God, my husband and children. They understand that I have to work. Motherhood is not easy for working mothers but I thank God that I have been able to create a balance especially now that I live in the United Kingdom. In a year, I am usually away for about six or seven months working.

Fashion

I am not obsessively concerned with fashion but I like to look good. I wear what I like and the good thing about living abroad is that when one goes to a shop, you can try on clothes. I like wearing short dresses and they are my fashion fetish.

Mentors

I have a different perception when it comes to the issue of role models and mentors. You must realise that they are human and can make mistakes too.  There was someone I looked up to until the day he did something that put me off completely. It was too much for me to bear. Before now, I used to have mentors ,but right now, I don’t want to look up to anybody. I might see someone and appreciate what he or she does. Since I can be very emotional, I don’t get too attached to people or what they do. They might mentor you in a good way, but that should also come with some form of caution. The only mentor that I have right now is God.

Current productions

I have a group called Opeyemi Aiyeola Rehearsal Group, which nurtures talents. I have a script for my next movie but plans for the production are still in the incubation stage. When I finally shoot the movie, it will be a film fit for the cinemas.

Customs intercepts 102 bags of plastic rice

The Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 102 bags of plastic rice branded “Beat Tomato Rice’’ with no date of manufacture.

The Customs Area Controller of  F.O.U. Comptroller Mohammed Haruna, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos.

He said the commodity was stored for distribution as Yuletide gifts for the public.

Haruna said officers of the unit seized the plastic rice along Ikeja area on Monday, adding that a suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.

“Before now, I thought it was a rumour that the plastic rice is all over the country but with this seizure, I have been totally convinced that such rice exists.
“We have done the preliminary analysis on the plastic rice. After boiling, it was sticky and only God knows what would have happened if people consumed it.
“I advise those economic saboteurs who see yuletide season as a peak period for nefarious acts to desist from such illegal business.

Kate Henshaw blasts Vodka

For not obtaining permission before using her photo for an advert, Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw has knocked Vodka, an alcoholic brand, describing their act as lawless.

She wrote: “I detest this! This is what happens in a lawless country. Do you have my permission to use my Image?  She queried.

This is the second time this year that the actress would be making such outburst.

Recall that comedian Akpororo has used the actress to promote his show, an act she openly rebuked, only for the latter to apologise.

Vokda had put up a promo with Kate Henshaw’s image which reads: ‘Wear the crown, Kate Henshaw’.

Many wonder if the actress is willing to go to court over this, albeit there is no known law specifically governing image rights in Nigeria. Other top entertainers who have found themselves in the same situation include popular writer, Toni Kan; spoken word poet, Efe Paul Azino and singers, Simi and Praiz who were named as its brand ambassadors.

President Obama and Donald Trump Meet and unhappily shake hands

President-elect Donald Trump traveled to the White House to meet President Barack Obama today, and the two recapped their meeting in a brief press appearance in the Oval Office afterward.

“I just had the opportunity to have an excellent conversation with President-elect Trump,” Obama said. “It was wide-ranging. We talked about some of the organizational issues in setting up the White House, we talked about foreign policy, we talked about domestic policy. .

And as I said last night, my number one priority in the coming two months is to facilitate a transition that ensures the president-elect is successful.mI believe that it is important to all of us, regardless of party and regardless of political preferences, to now come together, now work together, to deal with the many challenges that we face.”

Trump spoke next, and took a respectful tone toward Obama — “I have great respect,” he said. He said that their meeting was supposed to be brief, but, it “lasted for almost an hour and a half, and as far as I’m concerned it could have gone on for a lot longer.

We discussed a lot of different situations, some wonderful and some difficulties. I very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including counsel, to explain some of the difficulties, some of the high-flying assets, and some of the really great things that have been achieved.”

However, Rahma is now claiming that he is trying to abduct the kids and traumatizing her after the court proceedings didn't rule in his favor...read what she just posted on Instagram below:

Mr Muhammad Babangida, pls understand sending thugs to abduct my children is not helping matters. You have traumatized the kids by sending ur goons to kill me, arrest me while they are watching. Then today you send your thugs again to snatch my children (and they almost killed my precious daughter by grabbing her neck and choking her, thank god the school has good security system otherwise only God knows what will happen) while we are in court! Why won't you allow the court to pass judgment? Are you afraid that you can't corrupt every one? Haba muha, enough is enough. I'm truly blessed the school were quick to react, my driver was quick to respond and my nanny telling the kids to run while she held on tight to the kids that your stupid goons beat her. Allah ya isa.

Yemi Alade and DavidoNigerian singer, Yemi Alade is the latest pop star to get featured on New York’s Fader Magazine after the likes of Wizkid, Davido andBurna Boy.

In the article where Fader Magazine described Yemi Alade as the ‘Queen of Afrobeats’, she was asked, ‘As someone who doesn’t come from the wealthy background of, say, Davido, has it been harder for you to reach your goals?
In her response, Yemi Alade said, ‘Oooh, have I had to hustle more? There is a very big difference between Yemi Alade and Davido. You could call Davido the child of a moneyman. I am clearly not. He might be looking at getting the most expensive car in the world, while I might get a fly car that can just get me somewhere.’
She added, ‘Before he passed away, my father got a bowl of beans with different sizes. ‘Look at it’, he said. And you see very big ones and very tiny ones. Ronke’s autopsy report’ll shock everyone – Source

As everyone awaits the result of the autopsy on the late Ronke Shonde, Saturday PUNCH has learnt that the report could be a shocker.

A source told Punch that the report, which will be out next week, might not go the way of public opinion.
Our correspondent had reported how Lekan, 51, allegedly beat his wife, Ronke, to death at their home in the Egbeda-Idimu area of the Lagos State last Thursday.
He was alleged to have shut the gate against the corpse and his two children.
The police from the Idimu division were said to have recovered the corpse by Friday morning after the landlady reported the case.
Lekan, a dockworker in Apapa, had fled and was reported to have travelled to Ondo State en route to Benin Republic before he returned to Lagos after much persuasion by friends.
The Abeokuta, Ogun State indigene, who spoke with our correspondent while in hiding, had denied complicity in the death.
He accused Ronke of sleeping with the general manager of a publishing company where she worked as the human resources manager.
After three days in hiding, the suspect gave himself up to officers of the Rapid Response Squad in Alausa, and was taken to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.
Punch correspondent, who visited the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, on Friday, learnt that the family had already been to the mortuary for some documentations.
A source said the autopsy would be released on Tuesday, adding that the result would be a shocker.
She said, “The police brought the corona form on Wednesday and the autopsy was conducted on Thursday. The report should be ready next week Tuesday. But the outcome will be a shocker to the world.”
It was learnt that Ronke’s family had postponed all plans for her burial till when the result was released.
A family source said she would be given a befitting burial.
He said, “Although this is a tragic incident, she will be given a befitting burial. Her church is expected to hold the service of songs for her next week when the report would have been out and the corpse released.”
Saturday PUNCH made effort to reach Ronke’s alleged lover, Kayode, on the phone, but he cut the call immediately he knew it was a journalist.
“Sorry Mr. Folarin, I cannot talk to you now,” he said and cut the call.
He had since been unreachable and did not respond to a text message sent to him on the matter.
Kayode is expected to report at the SDCI in the coming week to make statements to detectives handling the case.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the police were conducting investigations.
He said the police would not react to Ronke’s family reported forgiveness of Lekan.

Osinbajo explains N145 fuel price increase by Augustine Ehikioya, Abuja, May 13, 2016 at 6:26 pm in Featured, News Update

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday gave more insight into the reasons behind increase of the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol.
The government on Wednesday had increased the price from N86.50 per litre to maximum of N145 per litre.
In a statement he signed by himself, Osinbajo noted that there are many misconceptions that followed the announcement of new pump price.
According to him, the increase has nothing to do with subsidy removal but was a result of foreign exchange problem in the face of dwindling earnings.
In the statement titled ‘The Fuel Pricing Debate: Our Story’, Osinbajo said: “I have read the various observations about the fuel pricing regime and the attendant issues generated. All certainly have strong points.
“The most important issue of course is how to shield the poor from the worst effects of the policy.  I will hopefully address that in another note.
“Permit me an explanation of the policy. First, the real issue  is not a removal of subsidy. At $40 a barrel there isn’t much of a subsidy to remove.
“In any event, the President is probably one of the most convinced pro-subsidy advocates.
“What happened is as follows: our local consumption of fuel is almost entirely imported. The NNPC exchanges crude from its joint venture share to provide about 50% of local fuel consumption. The remaining 50% is imported by major and independent marketers.
“These marketers up until three months ago sourced their foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria at the official rate. However, since late last year, independent marketers have brought in little or no fuel because they have been unable to get foreign exchange from the CBN. The CBN simply did not have enough. (In April, oil earnings dipped to $550 million. The amount required for fuel importation alone is about $225million!) .
“Meanwhile, NNPC tried to cover the 50% shortfall by dedicating more export crude for domestic consumption. Besides the short term depletion of the Federation Account, which is where the FG and States are paid from, and further cash-call debts pilling up, NNPC also lacked the capacity to distribute 100% of local consumption around the country. Previously, they were responsible for only about 50%. (Partly the reason for the lingering scarcity).” He said
He said that the government realised that it was left with only one option, which was to allow independent marketers and any Nigerian entity to source their own foreign exchange and import fuel.
According to him, the government expected the marketers  to source foreign exchange at an average of about N285 to the dollar, (current interbank rate).
He added: “They would then be restricted to selling at a price between N135 and N145 per litre.
“We expect that with competition, more private refineries, and NNPC refineries working at full capacity, prices will drop considerably. Our target is that by Q4 2018 we should be producing 70% of our fuel needs locally. At the moment even if all the refineries are working optimally they will produce just about 40% of our domestic fuel needs.
“You will notice that I have not mentioned other details of the PPPRA cost template. I wanted to focus on the cost component largely responsible for the substantial rise, namely foreign exchange. This is therefore not a subsidy removal issue but a foreign exchange problem, in the face of dwindling earnings.” He stated
