Idris plays the late South African leader Nelson Mandela in the biopic but while his performance has won rave reviews and landed him a Golden Globe nomination, the Luther star has missed out at the awards held on his home turf.
The actor was widely tipped to score a nomination in the Best Actor category but instead Christian Bale (American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) will battle it out on January 16.

Idris isn't the only Mandela star to miss out as his co-star Naomie Harris also failed to score an acting nod, although their movie has been nominated for Outstanding British Film.
The Luther star's snub has seen his dedicated fans storming Twitter this morning to voice their outrage, with one follower exclaiming:
"No BAFTA nomination for @idriselba ! What an absolute joke, get your act together BAFTA people!!" while another tweeted: "Did the @BAFTA jury's consideration copies of #mandelalwtf go missing in the post? @idriselba may not have won but been robbed of nomination".
12 Years a Slave dominates this year's shortlist, picking up 11 nominations including a coveted Best Film nod. The Bafta's top category only includes five best film picks, unlike the Oscars which made the decision to expand to a ten strong list in 2009, with Gravity, Philomena, Captain Phillips and American Hustle also in the running.
