Charles Novia on Tiwa's Savage's Video-"In Nigeria,a married woman should evoke respect for values"

Yesterday, Charles Novia gave his blunt opinion on Tiwa's "Controversial Wanted Video" ..Missed it?(Here)..He is not backing down and he has elaborated  in his new article published on his website

My tweets on Tiwa’s new video were my personal opinions. And most times, my personal thoughts could be the voice of a silent, quivering majority or a hemlock to the dense, obtuse and dim-witted minority.
The latter best describes proponents of the video who have been screaming to high heavens that there is nothing wrong with the video. Indeed, there is nothing wrong go them. How can anything be wrong to those set of people? Those kind of people who dress up and go to Church on Sundays and come out all holier-than-thou but have selective obedience to the teachings of their faith? Those kind of people, a new and lost generation mostly, who were born into a world of seamless and acceptable sexual laxities and swallow anything the mainstream American pop media spit out at them without even thinking for themselves?

Truth be told, as we all know, Nigeria is now very sick. It is not only the politicians and the militicians who are sick. The whole bloody citizenry is sick. I am in my early forties. I come from a generation grappling with the last vestiges of a sane and moral coda in a world fast disintegrating into factions of lewdness and psychophancy. My generation seems to be overawed by what is happening in today’s cultural dysfunctionality. Everyone just seem to look away. Hell no! Those of us who can speak out must speak out. I chose to. Not because I am holier than the other person but because there are STILL real and EXTANT moral rules in the world we live in today which must be left to stay for the world those I call the opposites try to rebuild.
If my voice will be the loudest and the last from that generation, then it will be. And I won’t back down in the face of impunity. What I say and will continue to say is a legacy of logic and thought I leave for the sane few and a pricking of dead conscience for the insane many.
And so, I must talk. I must ventilate. I must critique. Because someone has to do it. I do it not for pecuniary gains or for fame; I don’t need those. I have built a brand and body of work over the years which vindicates me. I critique because you don’t say it enough, so I have to say it more.
The Nigeria you dream about, that utopian Nigeria cannot come to pass if you trample all you hold sacred. Morality is an appendage of culture in progressive societies. Once that moral fibre is cut off, then your society goes to the dogs. A new society cannot be built without a cultural revolution. A change of the mindset. A mental re-orientation. Please someone should go and study China and how their cultural revolution has made them the world’s largest economy and the biggest world power presently or in a couple of years. Countries like China eschewed Western cultural imperialism and built their country on values peculiar and modelled to shape their future.
What cultural values are we building? Nay, what moral values? Yes, some may argue that some ignominy abound in Nollywood as well. It does. And my voice is at the lowest decibel there when it does.
Artistes in Nigeria are the last bastion of hope in the skewed society. The power of our art in music and movies makes them the first line of believable role models in Nigeria. With music and movies which stir hearts and moves souls to action, the artiste is the person whom the common man and the starry-eyed kids are likely to believe in. Not the politicians. That is the power of tart. When you misuse those powers for immoral proclivities, then you have killed the moral future of millions of kids and conscionable people who look up to you. You have created a dysfunctional moral society in one fell swoop through your visual adventurism.
But alas! In Nigeria, most artistes do not care about that. It’s all lip service.
A woman marries and the next thing she is pushing a new visual sexual agenda for the kids and her supporters are egging her on by saying it’s her body or using a silly mantra that her husband likes it like that. The one which makes me chuckle is when some say she is an entertainer and her short-of-strip-dancing antics in the new video is all about entertaining you.
Tufiakwa!

I live in Africa. I am a Nigerian and last time I checked, my country still has laws against that. I will not subscribe to an infidel agenda even if any other person does. A married woman, no matter the career path she choses, in this part of the world should evoke respect and admiration for sterling values. Does that video evoke anything short of wanton abandon and wagging fingers? You decide.

But in these days of  anomie ,nothing really surprises me anymore.

What would really surprise me wears a hat. A long one.

Christ Embassy's Pastor Chris Oyakhilome allegedly experiencing marital crisis...

Oh dear, we just hope this is false!

New reports claim that General Overseer of the Christ Embassy, Chris Oyakhilome is experiencing some marital crisis.

It all started when Pastor Chris Oyakhilome relocated to Johannesburg in South Africa in January while his wife stayed back in the UK where she had lived for years - an action that did not go down well with his church members.

His church members who did not approve of them living apart, recently created a Facebook page asking for some explanations.

According to them, Pastor Chris, has never been spotted with his wife by his side - not during ministry conferences, not during conferences by other ministers and never during the monthly communion service transmitted live from a TV studio. They inquired further why other high ranking women in the ministry who are close to the Pastor travel with him always.

The Facebook page was created on May 10th and the page administrators said that their sole objective was not to cast doubts or spread false stories about Chris but to call on all believers who understand God's heart concerning marriage and a Call to Action for Pastor Chris to do what he preaches.

Relatively, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome delivered a controversial speech on the 16th of May in a meeting with all UK Pastors and Deacons at Christ Embassy, Bermondsey.

In the speech, he addressed his church ministers thus “I am here for your concerns about the ongoing domestic issue with my wife and I know it affects you directly, being the ones under her leadership.

This is not an organisation or a political party, so it's not a place for you to air your opinion or scrutinise what we do. We had a vision, started and you joined us. If you don't like what we do, you can get out.

Churches where members air their views never grow.

Some Pastors wives think when they marry a pastor they are equal to the pastor. My wife thinks so, as a matter of fact, Rev. Tom was her pastor before I married her and Rev. Ray and Evang. Owase were her leaders long before I married her. How come she thinks she's senior to them now?

I already started Christ Embassy before I married her. I didn't marry her and said we should start Christ Embassy. I was already pastoring. I already set my sail and knew my direction before I married her. I only said come and help me.

Be careful of the friends you keep. My wife keeps friends who bring out the worst in her and help her see the worst in people instead of keeping friends that will help her vision especially as the wife of a global pastor like me.

Bitterness is prolonged and accumulated anger. My wife is always angry and bitter.

Allegations are either false or twisted information. The current situation is not as a result of what I did or what I didn't do. I didn't do anything to have caused an upheaval.

You don't join a woman to fight her husband.

I'm not teaching you what is wrong, at least I have 2 girls who will one day marry and I want to them to enjoy it.” He allegedly said.

US Embassy adopts new visa application scheme

The United State Embassy in Nigeria has announced a new visa renewal process.

The new scheme would allow certain visa applicants who have previously been issued US visas to renew their visas without attending an interview.

The new process, called Expanded DHL Drop Box Visa programme, would become effective from June 2.

“The US Mission to Nigeria is pleased to announce the expanded DHL Drop Box Visa Renewal Programme on June 2, 2014.

This programme allows certain visa applicants who have previously been issued US visas to renew their visas without attending an interview.

The programme now covers B1/B2 visas that have expired not more than two years prior to re-issuance and F, L and H visas that have expired not more than one year prior to re-issuance,” a statement issued by the commission on the new process read.

The statement further advised applicants to visit the US Embassy in Nigeria’s Website for information on the needed criteria for renewals.

It, however, said that applicants’ participation in the programme was not a guarantee for visa issuance.

The statement said that the consulate might request the applicants to attend visa interviews in some cases.

Dencia wants to turn your black daughter white

As women, most of us have insecurities about the way we look. There are those parts of our bodies that we sometimes wish we could change; you could be envious of your friend's great legs, or your sister's tiny waist that you know you'll probably never have.

For the most part of it we ignore the devil on our shoulder who tries to kill our spirit by constantly reminding us of how imperfect we are. And we learn to live with our uniquely different bodies.

But not everyone can ignore that nagging insecurity, especially when there are ways that will help you get rid of that problem.

The beauty industry is a money making business that has been planting the seeds of doubt in women for decades. It snatches the woman's self-esteem and says if you want to get it back, then do as I say.

The most recent player to emerge into this expansive game is Dencia. Dencia is a Nigerian-Cameroonian singer who is the founder of Whitenicious which according to her website is, 'a moisturizing cream enriched with powerful natural ingredients that will nourish your skin and lighten dark knuckles, knees and elbows'.

The idea of coming up with a skin lightening cream isn't new but what did surprise me is that Dencia is black, and a black woman at that.

Women of colour, from Nicki Minaj toBeyonce, have been suspected of bleaching their skin. And although they've never out right said it, the proof is in the pudding, you just have to see it for yourself.

In an interview with Ebony magazine, Dencia reveals that as a young woman she had skin problems and was a frequent patient at the dermatologist's office.

When asked about her name choice, she said that the colour white symbolizes new beginnings and it is a colour of purity that cleanses the mind and body.

Whitenicious is a product meant to help remove dark spots. But when we look at Dencia's before and after pictures, we see that it removed more than her skin pigmentation.

She developed a product to help with' skin problems', the below images suggest that she saw the colour of her skin as the problem.

'White means pure'
In an interview with Channel 4, Dencia defends herself by saying that people have the freedom to choose whatever they want to do, and if they want to look lighter then so be it. However, she doesn't realize how irresponsible her words are and the negative message she is sending out by saying that 'White means pure'.

Lupita Nyong'o vs Dencia
When Lupita Nyong'o was announced as the new ambassador for Lancome cosmetics, Dencia was the first to call Lupita a hypocrite. She critisized Lupita for endorsing a company that also sells skin lightening products.

And after Lupita gave her acceptance speechat Essence's Black Women in Hollywood event (in which she read out a letter written to her by a young black girl who changed her mind about buying Whitenicious after she saw how Lupita embraces her dark skin),jezebel reports that Dencia took to twitter to defend herself saying, "@IamDencia & oh @Lupita_Nyongo cln't talk abt the bleaching creams white people (Companies) make cuz the white man pays her, they own her!!"

So Dencia says that Lupita is owned by white people, yet she is the founder of a product that makes black women look white. Talk about irony.

Dangers of skin bleaching

Not only is the idea of changing ones skin show a sickness of the mind, it can also has grave medical and health consequences. When used incorrectly such products can lead to mercury poisoningskin cancer and a myriad of other health problems. When asked about the dangers associates with changing the colour of one's skin, Dencia reminded the world that well, anything can give you cancer, even breathing in air.

(Whitenicious promises results in 7 days. It might be a quick 'fix' but are the possible long term effects worth it?) Image:
Whitenicious

In the past we could blame the elusive beauty industry for convincing us that we aren't good enough. But these days, the blame has shifted, and we are the causing and fueling our own insecurities. Yes, women like Lupita exist. Women who teach young girls to embrace their natural disposition. But it's easier to convince a person that something is wrong with them, than it is to reassure them of their beauty.

The issue of skin colour, for women of colour, will always be a controversial one. Even with Lupita one can't help but wonder if she would have garnered as much attention if she had fair skin. Was it her dark skin that seduced the world to love her?

Being comfortable in your skin and body is very hard for most of us, especially when you're bombarded with pictures of people who are described as beautiful but share no similarities with you.

Nollywood star seeks more stakeholder support for entertainment industry

Moji Olaiya, a Nollywood actress, on Monday called on stakeholders in the entertainment sector to support the Federal Government’s Transformation Agenda.

Olaiya said in Lagos that every Nigerian should be an entertainment ambassador.

She said Nigerians should create opportunities through attitudes geared towards the promotion of African music and culture.

"The entertainment practitioners have to encourage tourists to visit Africa because earnings, revenues and resources are meagre and highly competitive. It is only when you attract them through quality songs and services that tourists and visitors will patronise Africa and increase our revenue earnings. So, it is high time the entertainers encouraged visitors and tourists to patronise the industry by producing quality songs and rendering good services required by foreigners,’’ Olaiya said.

She said that the development of the entertainment industry was the collective responsibility of all.

Olaiya called on Nigerians in general to also join forces in making the entertainment transformation agenda of the Federal Government a reality.

She urged entertainment practitioners to partner with the Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP), to re-invent and reposition the industry for sustainable national economic growth.

Olaiya said that the entertainment industry would develop, if the Federal Government pays adequate attention to the sector.

"The industry will fetch the government huge revenue, if well funded, adequate funding will make the Nollywood industry compete with its foreign counterparts on a near equal footing," she added.
